The SC SL runs internships for periods of 6 months.

Interns in the Registry, Office of the Prosecutor, the Defence Office and Chambers should have a first level degree qualification preferably in law. Interns in the Public Affairs Office, Court Management, Outreach and other offices require no formal qualifications.

Interns are given the opportunity to work on current cases, prepare decisions, draft opinions and work on overall issues surrounding the Court, or participate in taking information about the Court to the people of Sierra Leone as part of the Outreach or Public Affairs teams.

Each department of the Court has different requirements for interns.

The Special Court for Sierra Leone is an independent judicial body set up to "try those who bear greatest responsibility" for the war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Sierra Leone after 30 November 1996 during the Sierra Leone Civil War. The court is located in Freetown.

The Special Court consists of four separate institutions: the Registry, the Prosecutor, the Judges and the Defense Office. The Registry is responsible for the overall management of the Court.

[edit] Opportunities

The Court provides opportunities at Chambers, The Office of the Prosecutor, in Outreach, the Defence Office, the Registry Lgeal Office, and at the Public Affairs Office. Applicants can rank the top three offices they would like to work in.

At Chambers internship work includes research and analysis, document and file management, preparation for hearings and other support - including attending Court on occassion. Chamber interns are also expected to prepare a report recording the work they did at Chambers.

The Office of the Prosecutor takes on Trial and Pre-trial/Appellate interns. Trial interns work with one of the six trial teams and directly support the attorney. Work includes recording notes during trial, planning and producing follow up material and ensuring an effective flow of information from the different sections involved in cases. Pre-trial/Appellate interns follow up decisions from the Appeals Chamber, prepare future appeals and prepare for trial hears. Work includes legal research and analysis, document and file management, preparation for hearings and direction/support to investigation/witness support teams.

Defence Office interns work with the Principal Defender. Duties include legal research and analysis, document and file management, preparation for hearings and other support. The intern will work for the Office and not for a specific Defence team.

In the Registry Legal Office the intern will work on legal research and analysis of issues relating to the functions of the Registry; review and draft internal policies and procedures; assist in the negotiation of draft bilateral cooperation agreements with third States; and contribute to the formulation of the Special Court's exit strategy.

Outreach Inters will also provide support to Outreach to organize town hall meetings, undertake research to produce informational and educational materials about the Special Court and working with students to promote broader issues of human rights and justices. . Interns in the Outreach section will be expected to go on field trips upcountry.

Public Affairs Office interns will do work on the national and international media relations of the Court, including work on media monitoring, database compilation, and together with the video producer.

Interns in the Registry, Office of the Prosecutor, the Defence Office and Chambers should have a first level degree qualification preferably in law. Study in the area of international humanitarian law will be considered as an advantage.

Interns in the Public Affairs Office, Court Management, Outreach and other offices require no formal qualifications.

All interns must be proficient in English both written and spoken. Knowledge of local languages will be an advantage in applying for the programme.

All internships will be for a period of 6 months. No extension will be granted. Internships for less than 6 months will only be allowed in circumstances agreed between the Programme Coordinator and the Head of Section requesting the intern(s)

The Special Court does not provide any funding for international internships.

Applications will be considered on a competitive basis. An acceptance of an internship is not an offer of a permanent job in the Special Court, and interns should not expect to be offered a job on the basis of having previously secured an internship.
